Pune: APG Learning’s first batch for Postgraduate Diploma in Agribusiness Management commenced on Monday (July 23rd) at the institutes’ Pune campus. The diploma for the program will be awarded by APG Learning in association with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) University, a reputed UGC-affiliated research university and the oldest Asian institute for professional social work.
The batch of 50 students were addressed by Mr Vikas Dangat (Group Director of S.V group of Companies) who mentored the students on various aspects of entrepreneurship. He shared the importance of having a clear vision, validating new ideas and its execution and the potential in the food industry.
Dr Sudhir Kumar Goel (Ex. Additional Chief Secretory Agriculture, Government of Maharashtra) was the other dignitary who addressed the students. He spoke on identifying the gap between farmers and market due to the lack of knowledge on supply management, which has given rise to a number of opportunities for the students. Dr Goel recommended the students to explore these opportunities to help bridge this gap instead of opting for industry jobs.
“A focused approach is needed to enhance the capabilities and the opportunities in the agriculture business. India need talented youngsters to support the growth and address challenges of the sector,” said Mr Abhijit Pawar, the Chairman of the AP Globale Group. Expressing his delight with APG Learning’s partnership with TISS, he further added, “We are pleased to partner with TISS on this program as it combines the best of two worlds. This Vocational Educational Programme is being implemented for the first time in India with a focus on job-specific skills rather than providing only a broad based education.”
Need for Agribusiness Management
Agribusiness, of all trades, is the oldest and most important industry that encompasses half of the world’s labour force. Indian agricultural sector contributes to 23 per cent of the country’s GDP, providing employment to 65 per cent of the working population.
Expansion of technology has made the world tinier, thus adding complexities to the agricultural industry that involves constellation of activities. Despite the wealth of experience, apt education on the lines of fertilisers, pesticides, irrigation, mechanisation etc. is a major handicap to this vast industry. Skilled manpower has become the need of the hour to cater to the challenges, along with swift and right decision-making.
Both, TISS and APG Learning, work in the field of skill development and entrepreneurship; and therefore, have now come together for the program with the purpose to reduce the gap between industry and education.
The program is a blend of theory and on-the-job instruction, which includes 680 hours of industrial training that will enable the graduates to take up suitable jobs in the agriculture or allied sectors.
The current batch will graduate from the program in July 2019 and the registration for the second batch has already begun. More details on this can be found on APG Learning website.
